Q.  Hi Oracle,
Where's the place that was filmed the video clip of The Scientist song?

There were a couple of locations in & out of London according to Jamie Thraves (director):
"It was filmed in a variety of places. Camden, an estate near the docks. Kentish Town, the shot of Chris walking down the street was Kentish High Street*. The car scene was in Farnham, Boreham Wood or Bournewood+, I'm not sure, but it was the same place that Gladiator was filmed."

* Kentish Town High St.
+ Bourne Woods, Farnham, Surrey.

Q.  Hello Oracle and to every Coldplayer on earth!
My question is:
What model is the BMW driven by Chris in the music video The Scientist?
A few years ago I read that the car was an 1985 model. Then I discovered another website declaring the vehicle a 1987!

So now I am a bit confused! I want to purchase the same model car for myself one day. ;) And I want the correct model!
Thanks so much.

Devout Coldplayer forever,

It's an E28 BMW 5-Series. Apparently they were made between 1981 and 1988 so it very well could be '85 or '87.
I can't confirm this because it was merely a prop used in a video and has absolutely NOTHING to do with Chris. He only drove it in the video - it's not & never has been his car.

If you love the car and want to buy one the same, I think you're safe with a BMW 5 Series E28.

Q.  Hi oracle, I would like to know what the exact meaning of the song, The Scientist is. In detail please it's for a school assignment.

When I was studying Hamlet at school, I couldn't ask Will Shakespeare for the exact meaning behind lines he wrote. What I'm trying to say it, it's not actually what the exact meaning is that's important; it's what YOU interpret it to be.
I remember when we'd read poetry and English teachers would ask, "what do you think he/she meant by that?" I found it frustrating because surely only the writer knows?
If you can back up your thoughts with evidence from text, that's what counts.
I can tell you it was written when someone they knew was going through a break-up but that's all. The rest is up to you reading meaning in the words - there is no wrong or right.
Chris likes people to draw their own meaning from his lyrics.

Q.  Greetings, Oracle :)
In the liner notes for the A Rush of Blood to the Head CD, on the copyright page, it says "The scientist is Dan." Can you explain this to me? Who is he, why, etc.?

This has cropped up before: here and here. I do recall at the time Dan was going through a painful break-up (as was I) and that was somewhat the inspiration behind the song.

Q.  Dear Oracle,
Can you please tell me more about the remix at the end of this video? Who made it? is it available for download? I can't get it out of my head!

It's not a remix; it's The Scientist playing backwards.

Q.  Hello dear Oracle
So I was watching The Scientist and a question popped up to my head. Is there any record or video or anything of Chris singing the reversed version of the scientist? I'd be so happy if I could hear that :D

Thank you so much , all best wishes from Egypt.

You can watch the video filmed forward with Chris "singing" backwards here. The soundtrack is therefore obviously reversed too - that is, the original version backwards.

Q.  Hi beautiful Oracle,
I was wondering is this the original version of The Scientist, that Chris took a month of to practice backwards?
Thank-you almighty Oracle Xx

No, Grace. The person that posted that is being sarcastic (a sense of humour regular readers of The Oracle will recognize).
What you hear is simply The Scientist reversed. The video was shot forwards but then reversed.
This is a version of the original video matched with the song in reverse thus showing that Chris did indeed sing it backwards in the original filming.
It did take him about a month to learn but there were a few (backwards) lyrics written on boards in case he needed them for reference.

Q.  Hi Oracle,

The Scientist is my favorite song and has been for years and years and years.
I always wondered what the lyrics "Coming up tales" meant, and I had a thought today: is he referring to "coming of age tales" or something of that sort? Is he saying that he is growing up or something?

It's the other tails; not tales. It's not the rear end of an animal's body either.
"Coming up tails" refers to heads or tails. It's the flip of a coin which also explains the next line of the song - "heads on a science apart".

Q.  Dear Oracle, in the music video for The Scientist, was Chris recorded walking and talking backwards or was that just special effects?

Has it really been over 3 years since I answered this question?
The video was shot forwards and replayed backwards.

Q.  Have the band heard Willie Nelson's new cover of The Scientist and what do they think about it?

We did actually draw attention to it back on 31st August. We wouldn't share it if we didn't like it, so yeah, we think it's great!
