Q.  Hello Oracle, I was watching a video on YouTube of The Police at the Live Earth concert playing Message In A Bottle featuring John Mayer, and they pan to a shot of the crowd and in the front row I could have sworn it was Phil looking very happy to be there. Is this him?

Yes! Good spot, Ari. A close friend of the band & team was heavily involved in the project and here is Phil enjoying it (around the 1'18 mark) at the Giant's Stadium, NJ.

Q.  Do you know if we'll ever hear Phil sing or play any instruments on any album or track?

Phil has picked up a guitar in the past few years but other than his 3 video cameo roles, there's been nothing else performance wise. If he was to perform on a track I can't see him wanting to appear on stage (I'm dicounting the times he dressed as a violining Elvis) but he certainly has an ear that he lends in all senses.

Q.  Phil Harvey is always referred to as the 'fifth member of Coldplay' but do you know if he regrets not ever becoming an actual member of Coldplay, as in an onstage member?
Thanks, and Happy Christmas!

There was never a time that Phil was considering that position, so no, he doesn't.
He's as much part of the band as Chris, Jonny, Will & Guy but it's always been behind the scenes. Phil has appeared in videos and onstage as Elvis during Christmas Lights but Phil has never been in the band as a playing musician.
He is musical though which is why his input is such an integral part of the role of 5th member.

Q.  Q. Hi Oracle.
I read down below that Coldplay's fifth member (better known as Phil Harvey) also was in Paradise video. Since that, have I really tried to find him in the video. Thinks I need a little help.
Thank you.
Celine

He was one of the zoo keepers running after the escaping elephant. The other chap is Tim Crompton who you will no doubt have heard of over the years.
Here's one example yet he is totally playing down his history!

Q.  Dearest Oracle,
Today, watching again the video of Life In Technicolor ii, I saw a character that looked very similar to Colplay's beloved secret member Phil Harvey.
I am referring to the guy who is holding a camera and making a video of the "concert".
Is that guy actually Mister Phil Harvey or mine was just an impression?

Thanks in advance
Alessandro

It is indeed Phil (today also known as the Birthday Boy) in a nice little cameo role. He was also in the Christmas Lights & Paradise videos.

Q.  Hello Oracle :)

I was just wondering if the boys ever pick out their own MX clothes to wear on stage or on tv shows? Or does someone else (like Phil) tell them what to wear? Because I remember Chris saying that Phil tells them what to wear, etc. Is that true?

It's not strictly true, no.
From the start of an album & tour's conception Phil is there during all the decision making so does have a say in the style and overall creative feel etc. of the outfits but it's very much a team effort.
They all choose their look together and have a hand in colours, designs and ideas - along with Phil and a designer.
They do discuss costumes - for want of a better word - for TV / award appearances.
When it comes to the shows, they have choices of what to wear within their travelling wardrobe so mix it up a bit.

Q.  Does Phil tour with the band or does he only work with them in the studio?

Both. There may be the odd occasion when Phil's not on tour but generally he is. He's not always sat in every studio session either, but he'll be around and very much a part of it all.

Q.  Since I read the question concerning the AROBTTH singles' cover art, I have been itching to ask if the album cover was Solve Sundsbo's portrait of Phil Harvey? Coldplay does have five official members and I was wondering if he was depicted on the album cover as Jonny, Will, Chris, and Guy were for the single artwork.

I hope your day is filled with joy!
-Lisa

Phil isn't depicted in any of the AROBTTH artwork - not singles or album.
Although we now call Phil the 5th member of the band, that wasn't the case when AROBTTH was released; he was then their manager before taking a hiatus from all things Coldplay.

Q.  Dear Oracle who never answers my questions, on the demo cassette tape of Ode to Deodorant is written the number of Phil Harvey the fifth member of Coldplay since the demo was sent to promoters.
Does he still have the same number?

To be honest I didn't reply because I assumed that if you wanted a quick answer, you'd have just called the number?
No, Phil changed his number years ago. He sent it as he was their manager at the time.

Q.  Did Phil Harvey, the fifth member of Coldplay, post this picture in the exhibition room?

A few people have asked if was our Phil and yes he did indeed take and submit that photograph. Just to give you a little more information... On Saturday Phil posted the picture on Twitter with the caption "where me and Chris went climbing today".
The more eagle-eyed of you may have worked out from it they were in fact at Worthy Farm, the site of Glastonbury music festival; hence the name of the photo being Fields of Avalon.
