Released 19 March 2001 (Europe only)
Produced & Engineered by Ken Nelson, Mark Phythian and Coldplay
Recorded at Rockfield Studios, Wales and Parr Street Studio, Liverpool
Highest UK Chart position: n/a
By the closing weeks of Parachutes' release year, 2000, there was a sentiment within the band (and no doubt a significant proportion of the British public) that the album had received its fair share of exposure in that particular corner of the world. Thus the decision to release a fourth single only in countries that had not been overdosed on Yellow and Trouble.
The track agreed upon by band and record company was Don't Panic which had, over the course of six months' European touring, become an unexpected live favourite (thanks in part to Chris' harmonica solo and generous tossing of the instrument into the crowd). The song had been re-recorded for the album having been released eight months earlier on the band's Parlophone debut release, The Blue Room EP.
The song's earliest incarnation, however, had found a place in the setlist at the very first Coldplay gig in January 1998 at Camden's Laurel Tree (now closed). Originally it was entitled simply Panic and, with different lyrics and melody, was a sad recollection of a slightly disastrous evening Chris had spent entertaining a young lady called Alice Hill.
The b-sides for the release varied from country to country but the standard accompaniments were two live songs from the Norwegian Rockefeller gig not previously released: the Bond theme You Only Live Twice and Bigger Stronger the lead track on the band's very release, the Safety EP.
A couple of weeks before Don't Panic was released, the band picked up two BRIT Awards for Best Band and Best Album. Simultaneously, the song was A-listed at Radio 1 (a first, I think, for a non-commercial single) and the innovative video by Tim Hope became a big favourite on MTV. All of this meant that UK shops were filled with expensive import copies of the single and British fans ended up paying more than they should have. In retrospect, we probably should have just released it there in the first place.

Chris came to the band with the main chord structure and lyrical theme in September pre-production. Initial jams produced a fast guitar riff coupled with an aggressive vocal line that seemed heavily influenced by the early Supergrass singles. On the few occasions that the song was included in the set on the Bellatrix co-headline tour of November 1999, the emphasis had shifted onto the main keyboard riff but Will's drum pattern gave the song a calypso feel that actually sounded better than you might imagine.

The recording and mixing sessions for the band's debut album were finished just six weeks before the pre-ordained release date of 10 July 2000. The popularity of the single Yellow on British radio had made it imperative that the album be released in the immediate wake of its success. This put enormous pressure on the band to wrap up a recording session that had been continuing intermittently since July 1999.
The situation was best illustrated by promotional copies of the album that were sent out to journalists and radio DJs in mid-June. It contained a mix of 'Trouble' different to that on the finished record and was enclosed in an anonymous blue wallet. There was no artwork whatsoever.
In a move that at the time felt foolhardy but in retrospect was inspired, the band took it upon themselves to come up with a sleeve. Equipped with a disposable Kodak and less than accomplished photographic skills, they managed to snap the shot that went on to represent their music all around the world. The globe, bought for under £10 in WHSmith, had been their constant companion both on tour and in the studio.
On its release, Parachutes entered the UK album charts at No.1, displacing Eminem's Marshall Mathers LP, and then remained in the national top ten for a further 33 weeks. The album was popular in many countries internationally and the band were consequently engaged in an ad hoc world tour that would take them all the way through to September 2001. It was only then, after commercial and critical success that could not have been forecast by even the most ardent of enthusiasts, that the band were able to return to London and begin work on No.2.

discography_catalogue_text[11] = "The final recording session for Parachutes was dominated by the feeling of panic. Yellow had already been earmarked as an early summer single and the hope was that the album would be ready for release at around the same time. Any delays in completion would result in its release date being put back to October to co-incide with a third single. This would have been hugely disadvantageous. Everyone suspected that Yellow was a hit and therefore the perfect lead-in single for the album. Noone wanted to see an autumn release.
So the pressure was on. Deadlines were so tight that originally the band had to forfeit travelling to New York to mix Yellow so that they could remain behind in Liverpool finishing off the album. However when the initial mix came back, the band were unimpressed. They insisted on flying out to oversee mixing themselves. This left them even less time to work on the three or four album tracks that still remained unfinished.

When the band began jamming new tracks such as Yellow, Everythings Not Lost and Trouble just before their New Year break, the albums projected tracklisting quickly changed. It became apparent that some of the older songs had been surpassed and were no longer going to make the final cut.
Not so for Shiver, a song which had been around seemingly forever but which no one had tired of. The backing track had been laid down in Wales just after the Bellatrix tour and Chris and Jonny completed their parts within a day at Parr St. The track was immediately biked down to Parlophone in London with the suggestion that it be released as a single as soon as possible.

Again the location was London, as the band found a suitably experimental producer in Chris Allison, himself flushed with the critical success of the Beta Band's debut LP. Recording began in mid-July.
