1998
September: 'Safety' got Coldplay a gig in a cuban cafe as part of the
Unsigned Bands' Festival 'In the City' in Manchester. In the audience
was a talent scout who tipped off Dan Keeling of Parlophone records
to keep an eye on them. Another gig at the Falcon in Camden was written
up by NME journalist Simon Williams who wrote a glowing review and offered
them the chance to record the single 'Brothers and Sisters' for his
Fierce Panda label.
April: Chris' old school mate Phil became their manager and financed
Coldplay's first recording and release of self-financed 'Safety EP'
on 500 copies, limited CD.
January: Coldplay form, having met at University College Londonback
in 1996. The band got together after Chris and Jon started jamming and
writing songs together. Soon after, Guy came long to add some bass.
The current line-up was completed when Will decided to play drums for
them, despite never having played before. The name COLDPLAY was nicked
off their mate Tim before he could use it for his band. First gig, under
guise of 'Starfish' at Camden Laurel Tree (now closed). First coldplay
internet site established by Claire Smith (later developed into coldplay.org,
which is now part of .com) COLDPLAY became best mates who all live and
breathe to make beautiful music. From their very first session together,
they realised they had the chemistry to acheive greatness.
