As the festival season came to a close and touring time came into view, the record company was anxious for another release. Unfortunately, the recording session had not been as prosperous as it might and the band had only three tracks which they felt could be released. These tracks were Dont Panic, See You Soon and High Speed but, excellent as they all were, none was an A-side. The recording session came to an end and the band embarked on their first full tour of Britain, co-headlining with the somewhat mad but extremely friendly Bellatrix. As the tour played out to appreciative crowds all around the country, concern grew within Parlophone until the decision was made to amalgamate the three new songs with the Safety EPs Such A Rush and Bigger Stronger. Bigger Stronger, as the new EPs A-side served its purpose well. It earned Coldplay their first couple of plays on daytime Radio 1 and kept an expectant music press happy. Accusations of Radioheadism could only be partially denied since the track had been written and recorded one and a half years earlier in the influential aftermath of OK Computer but the band fielded these criticisms calmly, explaining to all who cared that the current live set actually bore very little resemblence to Oxfords finest. |
